I’ve heard some folks insist “Every day is Mother’s Day” but for me, October 17th celebrates an occasion I feel should not be relegated to just one measly day a year. I refer, of course, to “Wear Something Gaudy Day”. October 17th is "Wear Something Gaudy Day". I’m not making this up; seriously, it’s a thing. There are all kinds of holidays, most of which are pitched by people or organizations trying to help promote something. (All I had to do was write Chase’s Calendar of Events and BOOM! April 17th is now “Nothing Like a Dame Day” -- my my blog’s “holy day.”) However, October 17th celebration of garish goodness is brought to you by 70s sitcom Three’s Company. One of the show’s not-part-of-the-three regulars, a character named Larry Dallas (that name tells you a lot about him, the show, and the 70s), declared a “Wear Something Gaudy Day”. Not sure how October 17th became that day, but one day’s as good as another. In fact, more days should be devoted to flashy dress. Or tacky dress, or ornate clothes or inappropriate duds or whatever get-ups get you going! We all know clothes aren’t just there to cover up your private parts or keep you warm in winter. Fashion expresses who you are, what you value, who you want to be, how you want to feel. It’s there to make you feel good and make you you. Now, Merriam-Webster defines “gaudy” as 1) ostentatiously or tastelessly ornamented; or 2) marked by extravagance or sometimes tasteless showiness. But that is just some straight-up dumb dictionary haterade. This presupposes that showiness or ornamentation is tasteless, and that is just not so. Just ask All-Time Hall of Fame fashionistas like Diana Vreeland, Iris Apfel, Rita Lydig, Millicent Rogers, Carmen Miranda and Coco Chanel! I don’t about you, but I want to live in a world where kitschy clothes and over-the-top outfits are out. My 40s floor-length banana print gown shouldn’t only see daylight one day a year, neither should my 50s sequined cock fighting circle skirt or my 60s silvery mod go-go boots. They and I deserve to have fun all year round. So while some Jews are only observant on the High Holidays (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur), when it comes to flamboyant fashion, don’t you just be occasionally ostentatious. Let your freak flag fly whenever the mood strikes you. But for those who aren’t yet ready to let their inner diva have free rein whenev, this October 17th reach for something a little bold, a little crazy. Wear something so out there that it’s in – and tell anyone who looks at you sideways to lighten up on that shade because you’re observing “Wear Something Gaudy Day” and you’ve got a right to bear arms…stacked with bejeweled bangles. Hallelujah, let freedom bling! (And remember: Only 364 shopping days until next Wear Something Gaudy Day!) This piece also appears on LikeaBossGirls.com
